On the topic of inefficient cook stoves, apparently programs like AIR that replace them can put a big dent in CO2 emissions. I didn't grasp the scale of soot's role in climate change, until I read a Global Dashboard article today that says a recent study suggests it’s responsible for 50% of Arctic warming.

I commend you future leaders on your efforts. You exemplify what we Rotarians look for as caring humanitarians. Don't let it stop with this experience, as young people like you are changing the world for the better.

thanks for your thoughtful and inspiring piece Adam. In addition to the good work done on the ground to make a difference to people's lives, we can all play a role at home by ensuring that the products we buy, for example forestry goods, are cultivated sustainably. The sustainable forestry initiative provides a set of standards and labels we can look out for.

The work of AIR is necessary, challenging, and awe-inspiring in today's world. Instances of self-created poverty and environmental harm can be solved through one simple practice: education. AIR's mission to educate and raise awareness in these Guatemalan communities illustrates beautifully the willingness of people to make positive change when shown the way. Nice work, and I look forward to reading more!
