Dr. Juan Carlos Castilla is an Emeritus Professor and Full Professor at Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile and the most cited Latin American marine biologist (over 10,000 citations). His research specialties include marine ecology and biodiversity, bio-physical and social impacts in coastal zones, management of coastal resources and small-scale fisheries, and marine conservation. Dr. Castilla is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the Third World Academy of Sciences, Academia Chilena de Ciencias, and the Academy of Sciences of the Kingdom of Morocco. He has been the recipient of numerous prizes for his work, including the MIDORI Prize in Marine Conservation (2012) and the Chile National Prize in Applied Sciences and Technology (2010).
